2007 Legends Champs come of age...

The 2nd year Mud Hens have climbed the top of the heap to claim the Lutz Cup after finishing last season in 8th place. This season the Hens improved their win record by 13 games and now look to take on the 2007 Vintage Champion Hobos in their Best of 5 semi final that begins Tuesday night. In the other Vintage semi, it is a rematch from last season as the Red Sox will take on the Cardinals. That Semi final begins on Wednesday.

For the entire playoff schedule, please check out the link at the top of the page.

Hobos capture spot in Vintage Playoff

In a must win game for the Yankees it just wasn't to be as they couldn't hold their 2 run lead and ended up tying the Hobos 3 - 3 thus ending their Vintage playoff hopes and clinching the final Vintage spot for the Hobos. As it sits now, the Red Sox are slotted 3rd and the Hobos are 4th, they will have to see how the rest of the schedule shakes out as the Mud Hens currently hold down 1st place with 2 games to go and just have to win one of the remaining two to claim the Lutz Cup. The Cardinals currently hold 2nd place and if it stays that way it will be a rematch from last year's semi final between the Cards and Sox that was eventually won by the Sox in 5 games. The Legends playoffs will also start to clear up after tonights games are reported. Stay tuned to the BVB site for the playoff updates.

Playoffs are almost here...

Last night was supposed to be the last night of the regular season but with the influx of rain and inclement conditions this year the BVB has been forced into rescheduling a record 12 games before the playoffs. At this point in time their is only one team, the Red Sox, who finished the regular season thus escaping mother nature, but then there is the Yankees who had a record 7 games postponed and now have a tough schedule ahead.

What we know right now is the Cardinals and Mud Hens are fighting for the one and two positions in the standings while the Red Sox are in the number 3 spot. The Hobos and Yankees will duke it out for the final Vintage playoff spot, while the unfortunate losing team will be relegated to battle for the Legends title with the likes of the Marauders, Giants, X-Men and Cubs.

The playoffs start on Tuesday September 2nd. Check out the BVB website for the playoff schedule.

Burlington Black 49ers go
'BACK TO BACK'

The Burlington Black 49ers were looking to retain their CNOBF championship but they would have to defeat a tough Tillsonburg team... and that is what they did. The Black 49ers defeated the team from Tillsonburg 5 - 4 to retain the National title for a 2nd year.

The 49ers opened the scoring with single runs in the 1st and 2nd innings and extended their lead to 5 - 0 with a 3 run 5th. The Old Sox weren't about to rollover and put up a quick 4 runs in the top half of the 6th before Mike Bennett doused the Sox fire. The Old Sox got the lead off hitter on in the 7th, but once again Bennett closed the door earning the save thus earning the Black 49ers the Championship.

The Black 49ers are the 4th team to earn 'Back to Back' championshisp and join the impressive club that includes the Oakville A's (1993 & 1994), the Calgary Cardinals (1995 & 1996) and the Tillsonburg Old Sox (2003 & 2004). The Black 49ers will look to be the 1st team to win 3 straight titles when they travel to Tracadie-Sheila, New Brunswick next season.

In the 50+ Chanpionship finals the Burlington Silver 49ers fell short in their attempt to win in their first try as they were beaten 9 - 3 by the BC Capitals. The Capitals were last year's finalist who eventually lost to the host Red Deer Vision Air Snowbirds. The Silver team displayed a great deal of class the entire tournament and kudos go out to Terry Wilkinson and his team.

There were two other teams that participated this weekend, the 35+ Blue's lead by Jason Riesberry and the 44+ Grey's lead by Jim Hambrook. Both teams again showed the other teams in this tourney that there is great baseball played by great players in Burlington Vintage Baseball. The 35+ Blue's and 44+ Grey's both lost out in the Quarter Finals to Tillsonburg and Oakville respectively.

Again, this weekends results show all BVB members and all other baseball organizations that Burlington Vintage Baseball is truly a place where quality baseball is being played.

Congratulations to all BVB participants.

Rain wreaks havoc with schedule...

July 23, 2008

Mother Nature is at it again. With this summer being dubbed the wettest since the early1980's, the wet conditions have wreaked havoc on the BVB scheduler Jay Hodgson. Last week there were 3 rainouts bringing the league total for this season to 10 games.

The league schedule has been updated, so team, check it out to see where you play. Please also note that the Red Sox / Yankees game scheduled for Sunday night at Nelson has been moved to Ireland, while the Hobos / Cardinals game has been moved over to Nelson to coincide with the continuation of a game played earlier this season that was suspended. The suspended game begins at 4:00pm at Nelson.

ATTENTION BVB NATIONAL TEAM PLAYERS - There is a meeting on Monday July 28th at 7:00pm at the Navy Club. Please make sure you attend.

BVB Golf Tournament a huge success ...

July 22, 2008

The Second Annual BVB Golf Tournament was held this past Saturday at Indian Wells Golf Club.  While the weather was not the greatest, the camaraderie and good times between all participants sure was good sight.  A team consisting of Cardinal players Steve Mahar and Jeff Gilleland, along with two touring professionals, defended their title proudly with a score of ten under par.

New this year was a “long drive with a baseball bat” along with tournament mainstays Longest Drive and closest to the pin.  Local Nickel Brook Brewery also had a Closest to the Keg competition.  Thank you to all tournament sponsors and of course the golf volunteers: Jim Harrow and Jason McKenna on the 5th hole and manning the putting the competition, as well as Craig and Andrea Carroll for their support at the 13th hole.  A special thank you goes out to Gord Harris and Tim Barnes for their efforts with getting our sponsors, and of course to Terry Wilkinson for all his efforts.  The Silent Auction again was huge success, thank you very much to Lee Mackey, Gord Harris, Walter Lutz and Mike Bennett.

For all those that participated, I trust you all had a great time and hope to see you next year!!  For all those that were not able to attend, hope to see you next year as well, this truly is a showcase event for you and your league.

BVB National Teams take on rivals...

July 9, 2008

Two of the BVB National teams took part in tournaments the last few weeks and both did extremely well. Two weekends ago the 44+ Grey 49ers lead by Manager Jim Hambrook took his team down to Welland for the 45+ Provincials and came away with a 3 and 0 round robin record. In the Championship finals, the Grey's took on their closet geographical rivals the Oakville A's and after a valiant effort the Grey's fell to the A's by a score of 9 - 4 thus finishing runners up in the tournament.

This past weekend, the 35+ Black 49ers participated in Niagara Falls in the Chippawa Tournament that featured teams from Tillsonburg, Dufferin-Simcoe and Hamilton. The Black's defeated Tillsonburg and Hamilton to start the tourney 2 - 0 but hit a minor speed bump when they were defeated by Dufferin-Simcoe in their 3rd game. The loss caused a 3 way tie with Dufferin-Simcoe and Tillsonburg with the 3 teams finishing 2 and 1, but Tillsonburg was on the outside looking in as they lost the tie breaker with the most runs scored against setting up a rematch with Dufferin-Simcoe. In the championship game the Black's took control early and hung on for a 9 - 5 win to claim the Chippawa title.

Next up for the National program are exhibition games on Friday July 11th when the 50+ Silver 49ers take on the 44+ Grey 49ers at 6:00pm and at 8:30pm the 35+ Blue 49ers take on the 35+ Black 49ers. Both games are at Nelson Park. These games will be a great test for all 4 teams, allowing each team manager to see all players in action

Happy Father's Day ...

June 12 , 2008

This coming Sunday is Father’s Day and has been customary over the years, the BVB schedule is full.  Many, if not the majority of players in the league are fathers themselves so will get to spend the day being spoiled by their children, and the night with their BVB friends.  Players will also remember their first exposure to baseball themselves, when their Dad’s bought them their first glove and played catch with them for the first time in the backyard or on the street.  “Fathers, Sons and Hockey” is a book written by Roy MacGregor that talks about the special bonds formed by father and son through the love of hockey.  A similar story could have just as easily been written about Fathers, Sons and Baseball, as the backyard, the street and the ball diamond have played a huge role in formulating those close bonds in the same ways as the hockey rink.  Perhaps a full BVB schedule on Father’s Day is the perfect homage to the importance of baseball in the relationships of fathers and sons and should rightfully remain a time honoured tradition in the season schedule.

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s in the League!

Wood Bats, Low Scores, Who Knew...

May 27 , 2008

After two exhibition games and now the first few regular season under the collective belts of the BVB it is safe to say that 2008 promises to be the most competitive season in the history of the league.  Already several games have been decided by a single run which has much to do with managers strengthening their teams line-ups in the offseason and much to do with the parity that wood bats bring.

Defense and pitching have never been as critical as they are now.  In seasons past a deficit of a couple runs didn’t represent much of a mountain for teams to climb, but in this ‘new age’ of BVB teams are learning quickly that runs don’t come cheaply.  Teams are beginning to understand that they will have to bring runs across the plate the old fashioned way – by manufacturing them through stolen bases, hit and runs, bunts and some timely hitting.

The season has started particularly well for the Red Sox and the Mudhens who have both earned two wins over some tough opponents.  The Yankees, Hobo’s, Cardinals and Marauders will join those two teams in what will likely be a dogfight all season to get into the Vintage side of the playoff brackets.  And even with that said, the newly revamped line-ups of the Giants, X-Men and Cubs are more than capable of stringing together some wins and challenging for a spot in the upper tier as well.

In a 20 game season each game carries enormous weight.  Come out to the yard on any given night and you are likely to find two teams locked in a battle to determine their playoff fate.  Hope to see you at the yard soon.

Tuesday Night Action...

May 21 , 2008

Last night in BVB action the Mud Hens remained perfect on the young season with a 3 - 2 win over the Cardinals in a defensive / pitching battle... The Hens are playing inspired ball this season as they have yet to taste defeat including the exhibition games... The win moves the Hens into a 1st place tie with the Yankees while the loss drops the Cards record to 1-1... In the early game at Millcroft, the defending Vintage Cup champsion Hobos evened their early season record to 1-1 with an 8 - 0 whitewash over the Cubs who drop to 0-2...

The only Friday night BVB action at Nelson has the Red Sox (1-0) taking on the Hens (2-0), while the Hobos (1-1) face the Giants (0-2)...

BVB Kicks of '08 Season ...

May 6 , 2008

The time has finally arrived; the 08 baseball season is set to take flight. On Friday May 9th, the 2008 B.V.B season kicks off for real.

Who will be crowned Vintage and Legends champions?

Who will represent Burlington at this years Nationals?

The teams are clearly chomping at the bit to “Get er Done”. While some teams played there pre-season like it was September, others knocked off some rust in anticipation of a summer of competition and camaraderie.

B.V.B would like to welcome both its new members and returning members to what should be a fantastic summer of baseball. Many events will take place over the summer that will leave lasting memories for the Kid in all of us. Please do your part to contribute to the ongoing success of Burlington Vintage Baseball.

Have a safe and successful baseball summer.

The call of 'PLAY BALL' nears...

April 6, 2008

With just a few weeks remaining until the official start of the season, BVB teams are in full swing to solidify their rosters and begin the 'rust-shedding' process of spring training.  Of course spring training means more than just throwing the ball and swinging the bat...  It also involves getting the appropriate equipment ready for the upcoming summer.

Many BVB players took advantage of a bat fair a couple weeks ago where they could test out various wood model brands and choose their weapon of choice.  But new gloves, cleats and various other equipment necessities are being scooped up during these final thawing stages of winter.

Indoor facilities are also seeing their fair share of BVB players lately as teams want to start the season off swinging; both literally and figuratively.  Every team is out to claim what the Hobo's have earned the past three seasons - the Vintage championship.  League GM's hope that the combination of returning players and new recruits will provide the formula needed for that success.  Each team will play two exhibition games where they hope to find their groove quickly before the regular season begins.

The final evidence of this long winter has just about melted away and come the beginning of May players will hear the words they've waited nearly eight months to hear - "Play ball...!!!"

March 30 , 2008

Last weekend the BVB held their wood bat fair for their league members and a success it was.  With 5 baseball vendors from the local area participating in the event close to 80 players from the various teams in BVB came out to take a peak at shat was available and most went home with a bat or two in their hands.  Bats were not the only thing to be of interest at this fair; batting gloves, pine tar, and performance base layers were there for the taking with some teams making deals to make bulk buy purchases for the upcoming season.  The BVB season gets underway with exhibition games on May 2nd, 4th and 6th with all 9 teams getting 2 games under the belt before the real season starts with a full slate of games on Friday May 9th.  The season will run through the summer months with the playoffs starting in September with the culmination of the championships ending at the end of the month.  All teams are looking for a shot at the Vintage Championship.

In a winter where Ontarians have had to shovel their driveways more than any other in recent memory it has been easy to let our minds wander to the promise of warmer weather.  And as we watch highlights of MLB spring training, BVB members begin to brim with excitement for the upcoming 2008 season.

Each season brings change in the way of player personnel and team uniforms but the most notable change set for 2008 isn’t the look of the game as much as it will be the sound.  The familiar ping of aluminum bats will be replaced with the traditional crack of wood.  At the 2007 year end meeting, teams voted 8-1 in favour of going to wood bats, proving that the ‘Wood vs. Aluminum’ argument wasn’t much of a debate after all.  Player safety, baseball tradition and a move towards the same standards as the National program made the decision an easy one for BVB members.

The Vintage Champion Hobo’s will have a target on their back for the 3rd year in a row as they seek a 4th consecutive league championship.  The sophomore Mud Hens are the defending Legends Champions but will be among the many teams looking to knock the Hobo’s off their perch.  The Yankees are the two time defending Lutz Cup winners, the Red Sox came within one game of Vintage glory, the Cardinals look to continue their trend of significant improvement, the Marauders have the talent to beat anyone, the Giants hope a name change from the Indians will bring success, and the X-Men and Cubs have been active on the recruitment front.  In short, 2008 promises to be a year with more parity than BVB has ever seen.

2008 will also be the year where Burlington will look to defend the Canadian National Oldtimers Championship that they won in Red Deer last summer.  This years Championships are being hosted in Hamilton which will allow the majority of eligible players to compete and help defend.  Both the 35+ and 44+ teams will be targets for their opposition as they both brought home hardware last year with the 35+ team earning Top Prize.

The snow is still on the ground, but spring is around the corner and a fantastic 2008 season awaits BVB players and fans alike.  See everybody at the yard soon!

BVB is 'ON THE AIR'

February 27, 2008

After some down time BVB is back on the air and looking forward to another successful season.

Like spring, everything is new again and everyone is a contender. There have been a number of changes over the past 6 months and one of them is the Website.  Soon the webmaster will be contacting all teams to have 2 volunteers attend a Brief workshop to review the operation of the site and have all teams sites up and running so everyone can stay on top of the latest buzz around the BVB.

2008 finds the league in great shape as we march towards our 9th year of operation.  Each year we crown 2 Champions and this year will be no different.  Last year we had the honor of adding 2 more trophies to the showcase.  The 2007 44+ Tier 2 National Championship (BVB Grey 49ers) and the Biggest Bomb of all…  …the 35+ Vintage Grand National Championship (BVB Black 49ers)

As we turn our attention to a return to the field we will be doing so with a fresh approach and some new tools to work with, gone will be the familiar ‘Ping’ heard around our parks since our inception and replaced with the sweet sounds of Wood cracking as Maple and Ash wood bats make there debut in 2008.

Teams, players, equipment, uniforms and faces will continue to change but this great game of ours will continue to offer us the opportunity to enjoy its rich traditions.

Please stay tuned as the weeks ahead will be full of exciting news as we approach the 2008 first pitch.

See you all on the field soon!
